THE STAYCATION EXPERIENCE

Happy traveling, cyber-explorers! We’ve spent the last week frolicking on the island of Sardegna, but now we’ve caught a ferry back to Naples and taken a train down to Sorrento at the beginning of the magical Amalfi Coast – la Costiera Amalfitana. For those just joining us, this virtual tour of Italy started five weeks ago and every week we visit new destinations. We’ve traveled from the tiny town of Subiaco in the Roman hinterlands, and we’re making our way down the west coast. There’s towns dotted all along the coastline, which one is the one for you? Let’s spend the week exploring!

Week 6: The Amalfi Coast

This idyllic stretch of coastline is loved for its lush green mountains that fall into the crystalline Mediterranean waters, and all the pastel-coloured towns that are dotted along it. Legend tells the name comes from a nymph named Amalfi who was loved by Hercules. Positano, Amalfi and Ravello are the most famous towns on the Amalfi Coast, but it is worth to explore the whole coastline. Driving through the windy seaside roads is a road trip you’ll never forget!

Pizza Positano

To enjoy the flavours of the Amalfi Coast during your staycation adventure, the Made in Italy chefs have teamed up to bring you Pizza Positano, inspired by the coastal town of Positano and featuring; a Tomato Base, Onion, Anchovies, Cherry Tomatoes, Garlic, Salt, Oregano and Mozzarella.

To See on The Amalfi Coast

Aside from the essential marvelling at the peachy-coloured houses of Positano and making the pilgrimage to the beautiful cathedral in the town of Amalfi – what else is there to do? To escape the crowds but still experience that quintessential Amalfi town feeling, head to Furore and witness the only ‘fjord’ in Italy, that whilst highly photographed, its beach is typically quiet! It’s a beautiful little spot on the coastline.

Prefer views from above? The coast has you covered. Head up to the town of Ravello, located in the mountains between Amalfi and Maiori. Also a relaxed getaway from tourists, Ravello has views over the ocean and looks down at all the fascinating hillside houses.

To Do on The Amalfi Coast

The conventional way to see the Amalfi Coast is through its windy roads, but there’s another scenic alternative. You can take a boat ride from Sorrento to Amalfi and explore the coast’s magic from a whole different perspective! If having a boat to yourself is more your style, rentals are done from most beaches so you can head off into the Mediterranean waters for a private day of lounging with exclusive views.

For those that like to stay on dry(ish) land, hike the hills instead to the waterfalls of Valle delle Ferriere. The walk will lead you to the lush, tropical underbelly of the curated Amalfi Coast. Along the way you’ll see ruins of old Amalfi paper mills, an important part of the Amalfi town’s history.

Flavours of The Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is renown for its fresh, Mediterranean flavours. Sit on a hillside terrace slurping pasta, with a cold drink in hand and of course, dessert! Try the Caprese salad with melt-in-your-moth mozzarella from the south. They’re a delicate but flavourful starter to your meal at any reputable restaurant throughout the Amalfi Coast. Follow this with some salty sea catches – fancy anchovies? They even serve anchovy essence in the dishes! And to finish off, make sure your dessert is anything with lemons. Tarts, juices, or aperitifs!

Bringing The Amalfi Coast Home

We’ve created the Positano Pizza: Tomato Base, Onion, Cherry Tomatoes, Anchovies, Garlic, Salt, Oregano and Mozzarella. If you feel like slurping delicately on some pasta, order instead a Fettuccine Gamberi to feel like you’re sitting on a terrace in Positano in this earth-meets-sea dish. And get citrusy! Stop by your local bottle-o and get some Limoncello, or make Jamie Oliver’s decadent Amalfi Lemon Tart

As you eat, watch the ethereal ‘Under the Tuscan Sun’ for those picturesque Positano scenes. If you feel like watching something stranger, give Roman Polanski’s ‘What?’ a shot. It was filmed entirely on location in Amalfi, and the views from the protagonists’ villa will make you feel like you’re right there with him!

Enjoy you staycation and the sites, sounds and flavours of the Amalfi Coast and we look forward to taking you on another adventure next week in Sicily.
